The wisest man who has ever lived said this:

My son, if you accept my words and store up my commands within you,

Turning your ear to wisdom and applying your heart to understanding,

Indeed, if you call out for insight and cry aloud for understanding,

And if you look for it as for silver and search for it as for hidden treasure

Then your will understand the fear of the LORD and find the knowledge of God.

I don’t know about you, but I sure want the last part and I’m not so sure I’m putting in the work that the first part calls for. You know, Solomon starts off easy enough. Accept what he says and remember it. Listen to sensible instruction and think about the right things. That’s not so hard. But then!

Call out for insight? Cry aloud for understanding? That sounds a little bit embarrassing maybe. Who does that? But he’s just getting warmed up. Look for it like precious metal and search for it like hidden treasure. What is it that all this effort is about?!

If we do all this, then, will we understand the fear of the LORD (remember LORD = “YHWY”) and we will find knowledge of God. Showing up on Sunday when it is convenient is hardly searching for hidden treasure. Occasionally cracking our Bibles open during the week when we get a quiet moment certainly doesn’t seem like looking for precious metal.

The good news here is that we are not alone. In both GRC’s Men’s and Women’s Ministry there are a variety of Bible Study groups that you can be a part of. There are different ways to participate, both in-person and electronically. For the Men, there are different studies in which you may participate. But all of the studies are designed to understand the fear of the LORD and the knowledge of God as if we are searching for precious metal or seeking hidden treasure. Won’t you find a group in which you might participate this fall? There is no greater treasure than to know the hope to which we have been called, the riches of his glorious inheritance in his holy people, and his incomparably great power for us who believe.
