When you sit down to have a breakfast of bacon and eggs, one can easily say the chicken was involved. The pig, on the other hand, was committed. Likewise, at Thanksgiving dinner, the turkey was committed.
Perhaps these are not the most pleasant thoughts when enjoying dinner, but as a Christian it’s a concept we have to examine in our faith. Christ was committed to our salvation. He gave his all.
Where are we in our faith? Are we involved? Or are we committed?
In both the Old and New Testament, believers are told to love God completely:
Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God, the LORD is one. Love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength” (Deuteronomy 6:4-5)
Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one. And you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength. (Mark 12:28-30)
I think following those commands are pretty hard. I’m a sinner. Frequently I feel like the father of the demon possessed child, who cried out “I do believe, help me overcome my unbelief.”(Mark 9:24)
And I am thankful God has provided me with the Holy Spirit who will do just that – take away my doubts. I was “made alive by the Spirit.” (I Peter 3:18)
Christ is committed to us. He is not simply involved with us. We have the Holy Spirit to help us be totally committed to God.
I do not want to be involved with God.
Lord, I am thankful for your commitment to me. Help me be as committed to you.
